流徙多年，中國人都熱衷尋根，追溯家庭本源。縱使香港和荷蘭相距千里，二十歲後的鄧綺玲來往兩地，以她獨特的觸覺以及旅居外地的體驗，嘗試利用攝影續寫她上兩代、她自己，以及她女兒的故事。她的攝影結集《四代人的故事》(The Story of Four Generations)，部份作品現於本公司的攝影廊展出，並開放予公眾參觀。

In deze moderne, technologische tijd gaan veranderingen samen met oude tradities. Maar de beelden uit 1994 en 2000 in combinatie met de nieuwe uit 2009 benadrukken dat de oude (1e) generatie een ander verleden/basis heeft dan de 4e generatie.Het laat het contrast zien tussen de generaties.
Volgende maand ga ik verder met het fotograferen van de omgeving uit mijn jeugd, in Nederland.in 2005 had ik oma Mee Fung ook nog gezien, dat was voor het laatst...

I'm still in Hong Kong working on my project "Four Generations", ..it is very exciting being in HK again...

het wordt wel wat, in 1994 heb ik een serie zw foto's gemaakt en in 2001 portretten van mijn grootmoeders. Mijn oma is inmiddels 92 jaar oud, en nog net zo sterk. Het lijkt me mooi om de foto's uit al deze periodes bij elkaar in een boek te zien.

I don't know who took this first small black&white picture of my grandfather, I like the picture very much.In 1994 I planned to visit my grandfather, but he died two months before I could visit him..(on my birthday, 2nd of May)...

The Tang Ancestral Hall, alias Yau Kung Tong, was constructed by the Ha Tsuen Tang clan to commemorate their two ancestors, Tang Hung Chi and Tang Hung Wai, for establishing the village settlements in Ha Tsuen. According to a stone inscription named "Dingjian Zhehui Ergongci Peixiangbei" placed in the middle hall, construction of the Tang Ancestral Hall began in the "jisi" year of the Qianlong reign (1749) and was completed in the "gengwu" year of the Qianlong reign (1750). The ancestral hall came into use in 1751. The Tang Ancestral Hall underwent two major renovations in the 17th year of the Daoguang reign (1837) and the ninth year of the Guangxu reign(1883) respectively. Most of the historic building fabric and relics are still preserved in the hall. There are a number of honorary plaques hanging in the middle hall, indicating the glorious history of the Tangs in the Qing imperial government.

The magnificent ancestral hall is an example of three-hall-two-courtyard Qing vernacular architecture, having two side chambers built in the second courtyard. The ancestral tablets of the Tangs are placed in a dignified timber altar in the main bay of the rear hall. The building structure was built with green brick walls and stone columns supporting the timber-framed and tiled roof. Fine and delicate brackets are fixed onto the truss system. Exquisite fascia boards with floral patterns are found in the three halls and the side chambers, while some of the beams are elaborately carved with traditional Chinese propitious motifs.

The Tang Ancestral Hall has played an important role in religious and ceremonial events of the Tang clan in Ha Tsuen. Traditional clan activities, such as the ancestor worship of the Spring and Autumn Equinox and the Ceremony of Lighting Lanterns, still take place in the hall every year. Moreover, the hall is also an essential venue for holding the rituals of the decennial Dajiao festival at Ha Tsuen.

I went to Cuba for my photo-project in 2003 and 2004 ;" The last generation Chinese in Cuba".This project concerns the chinese community in Havana.The first chinese came to Cuba in 1847 as indentured labor for the sugar plantations. Some chinese came from California to set up grocery stores.War and communist revolution in china brought waves...The chinese population numbered about 200,000 at its peak.After the successful Communist revolution and Fidel Castro's rise to power in 1959, many Chinese Cuban entrepreneurs fled the country and entered the United States.At the moment there are only 280 chinese left in Cuba,The average age of the chinese is 80 years old...
Het was een bijzondere ervaring om deze mensen te ontmoeten.De meeste Chinezen daar spreken Kantonees en een beetje spaans,ze bezitten weinig maar ze boden me allemaal een maaltijd aan.Een restaurant-eigenaar heeft me zelfs een kreeft gegeven. En daarna vertelde hij met een "sub-dialect"het verhaal over het verschil tussen gebakken rijst in China, in Californie en Cuba...erg boeiend. Ik weet zeker als ik niet Chinees zou zijn dat ik nooit zo ontvangen zou worden.Ik heb een aantal reportages op tape o.a. met mevrouw Louix van het 'bejaardenhuis',de drukkerij, en de 11 overgebleven chinese societeiten...Maar ik wil nog een keer terug.De chinese begraafplaats was toch wel triest om te zien...Op veel van de kisten staat mijn achternaam...misschien verre familie??

Ik heb helemaal niet de intentie om iemand af te schilderen als een obstakel of een mens in de polder. Ach, een paar jaar terug was het niet eens mogelijk om dit werk te exposeren....misschien liep Nederland nogal achter met hun ideeen.
Ik wilde toen een statement maken dat vooral arme mensen genoodzaakt zijn om te integreren..

May 2005, I went to the Bun festival with my family..(my uncle was born in Cheung Chau)
Cheung Chau, a 2.4-square-kilometre outlying island situated to the southwest of Hong Kong Island, is a city dwellers's paradise: there are no skyscrapers, no vehicles and none of the disturbance of modern city life. However, in the fourth lunar month each year, this quiet island is transformed into a hive of activity when the fascinating Bun Festival, Cheung Chau's main claim to fame, takes place.
Said to be a hundred years history,
every year in May all people on the island
must kept in vegetarian diet for three days,
at the last day the procession held.
When midnight came hundreds young men hurried up to the three bun towers,
torn off all the buns,put them in bag or spread them over the crowd
This kindof activity was ceased after an accident in 1978,
the bamboo structure of the buntower bent in the middle and half fall.
The festival itself is an combination of praying to gods,
ganged together,and tonavigate the lost spirits.

....vanmiddag ging ik met Marc lunchen bij mijn favoriete restaurant vlakbij de Dam.,...als ik niks zeg,denken veel mensen dat ik niet
Chinees ben. De serveerster waarschuwde me dat ik kippenpotenheb besteld, maar wat ze niet weet is dat ik als kind mijnmoeder heb geholpen in de keuken met het schoonmaken van die'kippeklauwen',ik moest namelijk de vel+ eelt erafhalen,...Zo hollands ben ik dus niet!

vandaag ging ik mijn post ophalen...Een brief van Anna Cornelis fonds, waarin staat dat ik door de voorronde ben.Van de 47 fotografen zijn er 13 geselecteerd waarvan maar een in aanmerking komt voor een documentaire fotoproject.

...........Onder de arme bevolking heerst afgunst ten opzichte van de rijke Chinezen, waarvan de superrijken deel maken uit de regeringskliek.Onder de Chinezen in Indonesie zijn veel christenen.De christenen en de Chinezen moesten vaak als zondebok dienen voor opgekropte gevoelens tegen de regering.In 1949 moest Nederland onder druk van de Verenigde Staten en de Verenigde Staten de onafhankelijkheid van Indonesie erkennen en zich geheel terugtrekken uit Indonesie met uitzondering van Nieuw Guinea,dat pas in 1962 werd overgedragen aan Indonesie.Daarmee verloren de Chinezen in Indonesie in feite hun "thuisland". Er kwam een onzekere situatie; eeuwenlang was er een rassenscheiding tussen Chinezen en inheemsen en dat moest worden overwonnen. De Chinezen kozen in grote meerderheid voor het Indonesische staatburgerschap.

Veel Chinezen worden gezien als de joden van Azie; op zoek naar een betere toekomst,in China en daarbuiten.
De Chinezen die nog in China leven twijfelen of ze beter kunnen blijven of hun heil elders zoeken. De vertrokken Chinezen komen erachter dat China nu meer van economisch belang is. En dat gevoel of besef een keuze gemaakt te hebben om te vertrekken is interessant. Zullen ze spijt hebben?De economische groei van China op dit moment is onontkomelijk.
Ik ben persoonlijk meer geinteresseerd in het gevolg daarvan op de Chinezen die niet "meeliften" met de rijkdom....
Ik ben van plan in Indonesie de chinese bevolking te volgen en te fotograferen. Mijn vraag is of het de Chinezen lukt zich staande te houden in een economisch en politiek instabiel land als Indonesie...
Zullen ze blijven vechten voor hun plek of is de invasie voorbij?

Summer Jam Mix in China- July 2005

I went to the "summerjam mix" in July 2005. It was at the Miyun Lakeside in China.
Built in 1958 and a major drinking water source, the Miyun Reservoir is regarded as a weatherglass for Beijing's water resources situation.(more than 100km away from downtown Beijing.)

I was not allowed to take pictures of the lake, but I made some real party pictures...

Sam Yin was a poor orphan.......but she is a very strong woman.

Lee Wah Estate ,het makelaarskantoor van Yee Ling’s tante. Na twee dagen van eindeloos wachten is het zover. Vandaag zullen we Sam Yin ontmoeten. Yee Ling spoelt de film in de camera en wacht af. Ze is gespannen over het weerzien met haar oma. Dan komt Sam Yin het makelaarskantoor binnen. Er is geen sprake van een warme begroeting. Sam Yin ziet Yee Ling’s camera maar voelt er niets voor om op de foto te gaan. Wanneer Yee Ling’s tante zegt dat ze misschien wel geld kan verdienen als ze poseert, stemt ze toe. We stappen met z’n drieen in een taxi en gaan op weg naar de wijk van Sam Yin. Na een paar minuten komen we in een file terecht. Sam Yin vloekt over de teller die, terwijl we stilstaan van 10 dollar naar 36 dollar springt. Zodra we in de wijk aankomen, gaan we op weg naar het dorpshuis. Onderweg ziet Sam Yin op de vuilstortplaats volle containers staan. Ze zegt dat ze daar straks naar toe moet. Voor het hek van het dorpshuis gaat Sam Yin geduldig staan. Ze doet precies wat Yee Ling vraagt. We zijn stomverbaasd dat het zo makkelijk gaat. Ik let op het gezicht van Sam Yin. Ze kijkt met een strak gezicht en een scherpe blik in de camera. Opeens verandert haar uitdrukking. Ze kijkt op naar de hemel, alsof het noodlot toeslaat. Sam Yin ziet dat het begint te regenen en wil meteen naar de vuilcontainers. Yee Ling wil nog twee foto’s maken en ongeduldig blijft ze nog een paar tellen staan. Dan is ze weg… Als een bezetene rent ze naar de vuilstortplaats. Ze heeft karton zien liggen, en wil niet dat het nat wordt door de regen. Ze buigt zich ver over de rand van de containers en gooit al het karton op de grond. Yee Ling staat er verstijfd naar te kijken. Ze weet hoeveel schaamte er in haar familie heerst over het leven van haar oma. Ze twijfelt of ze hier foto’s van kan maken, maar besluit het toch te doen. Terwijl ze vastlegt hoe Sam Yin een ernorme container omduwt, hoop ik dat Yee Ling straks het lef zal hebben om de foto’s tentoon te stellen. Als het karton op de grond ligt, moet het snel naar een droge plek gebracht worden. Ik stel voor dat we haar helpen, maar Yee Ling wil dat niet. “Dat is niets voor jou” zegt ze. Ik vind toch dat we haar moeten helpen. We pakken wat dozen en lopen achter Sam Yin aan. Buurtbewoners staren ons na. Als het karton onder een zeil ligt, kijkt Sam Yin ons tevreden aan “…..bedankt zusjes”.

Vandaag hebben Yee Ling en ik een afspraak met oma Mee Fung. Een tante van Yee Ling heeft de ontmoeting geregeld. Om halftien ‘s ochtends zullen we elkaar treffen in restaurant ‘Do Heun’. Wanneer we in het stampvolle restaurant aankomen, zijn Mee Fung en Yee Ling’s tante nergens te bekennen.Yee Ling wordt gek van de mensenmassa en het lawaai in het restaurant. We gaan naar buiten en bellen haar tante om te vragen waar ze blijven. Zij is onderweg maar Mee Fung moet er al zijn. We gaan terug naar binnen en kijken nog eens goed naar het oude vrouwtje dat midden in de drukte aan een tafel zit. Nu pas herkent Yee Ling haar oma. Ze begroet haar met enkele woorden en gaat naast haar zitten. Ik zie aan Yee Ling dat ze geemotioneerd raakt door dit weerzien. In de vijf jaar dat ze haar niet gezien heeft, is ze erg achteruit gegaan. Yee Ling bestudeert haar oma van top tot teen. Haar gezicht spreekt boekdelen: deze oma is heel speciaal voor haar. Mee Fung kijkt afwezig voor zich uit. Wanneer de tante van Yee Ling binnenkomt, wordt het ontbijt besteld: dim sum en gestoomde kippenklauwen. Mee Fung geniet van het eten. Yee Ling krijgt geen hap door haar keel. Na het eten staan we op om te gaan. Zo te zien tot ongenoegen van Mee Fung die nog wat zoete bolletjes eet. “Die at ze vroeger ook altijd”, zegt Yee Ling veelbetekend. Yee Ling’s tante wil haar na haar eerste hap aan haar arm omhoog trekken, maar ze trekt haar arm terug en begint aan haar thee. Even later lopen we langzaam terug naar het huis van Mee Fung. Onderweg maakt Yee Ling een aantal foto’s van haar. Ze plaatst Mee Fung voor het muurtje van een buurthuis. Daar blijft ze verstijfd staan, met verschrikte ogen en met haar mond wijd open. Angstig kijkt ze naar de lichtmeter die Yee Ling naast haar gezicht houdt. We vragen ons af of Mee Fung zich bewust is van wat er om haar heen gebeurt. In het huis van Mee Fung ziet Yee Ling een foto hangen die ze vijf jaar geleden gemaakt heeft. Mee Fung wijst naar de foto en zegt trots “Die heeft Yee Ling gemaakt”. Yee Ling’s dag kan niet meer stuk. We drinken nog een kop thee en bergen dan onze apparatuur op. Mee Fung moet rusten. Als we weggaan kijkt Mee Fung me aan en zegt: “Yee Ling is speciaal naar Hong Kong gekomen om mij te fotograferen…….”

Shenzen 1994

In 1994 ging ik met mijn tante mee naar een groot toeristenpark in Shenzen.Dat is in het noorden van Hong Kong.De kinderen waren helemaal verkleed. Eigenlijk hou ik helemaal niet van pretparken,maar toch was het apart om te zien hoe die kinderen daar leven, of eigenlijk...werken.
Mijn oom komt uit Shenzen...In de afgelopen jaren is er heel veranderd in Shenzen.
Ik kan me nog herinneren dat ik in 1984 met mijn moeder en broers daar waren,
dat we met de trein en boot allerlei goederen gingen vervoeren....rijstkokers,een moter en ik dacht een tv. We konden goedkoper goederen invoeren met mijn paspoort.
